What car past or present has done it for you, only to find out it is either:
a terrible car
or
a car gearheads hate?
For me, it was:
The Ford Probe
Mmmmm Purple.
The last gen Mercury Cougar
Pictured: Dat bubbled lens.
The Pontiac Aztek (in metallic green or orange)
Pictured: Dat glass hatch tho.
And going waaaay back, the Pontiac sunfire (it looked more "exciting" than the cavalier).
Pictured: my deepest shame.
What cars have you liked that you have regretted? Try and post a picture (or five)!

ain't no shame in my game son. Witness the following
All that and a bag of snacks
And I love the aztec, and hate the miata

I love all those cars! Except that Sunfire. Disaster.

Second on the Cougar, actually. I had a huge crush on those when they came out. Wanted one so hard.

Mitsubishi Galant. Just cause i drove this econobox for 5 years in college. Still want one again lol

I still have a bit of a crush on the probe, and I respect people who got azteks for their quirkiness. The cougar has NOT grown on me though, and everytime I see a sunfire I feel a little disgusted that I ever thought it was even okay.

That one has never really done it for me, it always seemed wrong somehow, maybe because I got into cars as the enzo came out and it seemed pretty half-assed.

I don't actually regret liking these cars. So prepare the wood and prepare to burn me at the stake...
I would totally rock a Prius. 54 MPG? One of the most aerodynamic designs? I can dig it. Would rather have a Golf TDI, but I digress
Smart Car: Rear engine, rear wheel drive? YES YES YES
And while as a wagon owner I believe in the brown, manual, diesel, rotary, rear wheel drive, miata station wagon master race, I would totally rock a Suburban. No shame, no questions asked.

I'm actually surprised I haven't been banned from Oppo for this but:
It has absolutely nothing to do with looks too. I love the way this car handles. I love taking it onto dirt roads and going crazy fast. I've even expressed how much I'd love to stick an I6 turbo engine in there, lift it 2 or 3 inches, stiffen the suspension, and rally the shit out of it.
Reason number two why I'm surprised I haven't been banned from Oppo: I don't like the Miata. I don't hate it. Just don't like it.

Also, I think the Aztek is waaaay too criticized on it's looks, I think the Rendezvous is more deserving of eye bleach. And I don't mind the Aztec.
And I would totally rock a Yugo!
I would hand in my jalop card, but I never actually received it in the mail? I think it's because I changed shipping addresses. How do I change that on Kinja?
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:08 |

I had an unnatural love for Ford Contours back in the day... so I bought one. Silver SE, V6. Great little car. Handled well, rode well, sounded sublime! People love making fun of these until they drive one.

Beretta. I was obsessed. Literally. I knew everything about them and their entire history. And I just HAD to have one as my first car. Had to. So, I got one. And spent like two grand modding it. I even wrote a research paper on Berettas during my freshman year of high school.

The RB26 powered "Nismo Mustang" in Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift. Nothing set off car enthusiasts more than this, and it was fantastic seeing how upset these nerds got.
I thought it was cool if a bit limp wristed. They should have gone full hog and figured out a way to cram the second turbo in there.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:27 |

That's definitely a retireemobile!
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:28 |

haha yeah, are you specializing or staying in GP? My brother in law is GP and sought after, while everyone else who specializes is getting the shaft trying to find a job after spending a ton more for school to try and pay off student loans. Once upon a time it was a valid strategy

I still kinda like how the back of the aztec looks, but the front isn't great. It truly gets too much flack for what it is.

I really want to do Oncology, I have a passion for genetics and cancer itself, but I have considered GP. I have lots of time though, I'm only a sophomore so right now the only specializing I'm doing is in Organic chemistry haha

That would work. Nobody expects the SVT Cougar!
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:34 |

I also love this car, because I'm a sick bastard who likes weird engine swaps.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:34 |

Smogger Vettes.
Yeah yeah, I've heard them all:
Heavy, slow, malaise era, can't handle, GM at it's worst, ha ha let's all point and laugh at low hanging fruit, etc. Generally lambasted by those who have never looked past the factory specs. In a way I'm glad for that, since they can follow the herd and keep the prices down.
These cars have a ridiculous amount of potential. RIDICULOUS.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:35 |
|
I just imagine it being super fun to drive rally style. It could probably use a different engine though. Something a bit more responsive.

The Ford Probe GT is a regretful like of mine.
I also regret liking these:
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A…
I am sure that if I think real hard I can come up with a few more examples of regrettable likes in automotive fancy.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:39 |

how would you fit an I6 turbo in that little thing???
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:39 |
|
Dodge Caliber. I can't tell you why I like them, I just do.
Also, I honestly can say the first-gen Aveo hatch is one of my favorite designs (especially in Daewoo Kalos form). It makes me sad that they were so terrible. If I found one in decent enough condition for cheap, I'd probably still buy one.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:41 |

haha well good luck man. the right decision will come in time!
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:41 |

Someone from my church growing up had one in metallic brown, I still love them.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:42 |

I loved the last Gen Probe. The GTs where great looking cars. I wish that would have done right by that car and made it a rear drive.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:42 |

I know. :(
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:44 |

![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:45 |

I bet you could get a probe and swap silvia running gear into it. I imagine there are enough drift tarded s-chassis that you could make one for cheap.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:46 |
|
Ford Probe. I have a few good friends who grew up on those in high school- they're actually pretty cool cars once you get past the name
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:46 |
|
I don't remember exactly which one it was, but a friend of mine and I found a diesel V8 that would fit. But the torque would have destroyed the car. The engine bay is a good bit bigger than it looks like.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:48 |
|
Yeah, I agree about the front, I just like how GM really pushed the envelope on the design. Not as much of a soft reader like the current crop of crossovers. And that tent!
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:50 |
|
I don't even really like vettes, and I love these. I think it's the curvy fenders, and the broad potential for modification with great aftermarket support. Very nice!
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:53 |
|
I feel like it needs a higher revving engine than a diesel. It's not for crawling in my eyes, it's for driving fast in dirt. Maybe a turbo V6.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 11:54 |
|
^ this, including the age qualifier. I don't know if they were deliberately targeting the under-20 crowd (Why? No real income to speak of.), but that was definitely a thing.

The R34 GT-R. I was young. I was playing Gran Turismo 3 and the NFS Underground games. But ever since I watched The Fast and the Furious , I started to dislike it. I don't hate the car itself, I have massive respect for its capabilities but I hate how it became an icon for the Fast & Furious type of tuner. I could throw up every time I see replicas of the F&F GT-R, Supra and Eclipse. Nowadays I do not think it was particularly pretty either, just a boxy shape straight out of the early 1980s in all its box flared glory, slightly rounded for the millenium and garnished with functional, but ugly spoilers and intakes. If the Urquattro had been around in 1999, it would have looked exactly like a fastback R34. I greatly prefer the 4-door. Purple ones are neutral in my book, however.
What else?
The 2006 Impala SS. I remember being amazed about how it had all of 300hp. I also thought it was quite cool looking. Same applied to the Cadillac DTS. Little did I know about it being FWD and GM interiors.
And to finish this off, something European. The Opel Vectra OPC.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 12:01 |
|
Dude, the R34 in purple is nothing to be ashamed of, as long as you keep it stock it is the antithesis of FF/NFS.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 12:06 |

I love this. Because it royally pisses off purists.

![]() 10/17/2014 at 12:07 |

My point was that I generally dislike the (R34) GT-R with the exception of purple ones. I know it's no car to be ashamed of, but I still cringe everytime I see a remotely F&F'd one.
![]() 10/17/2014 at 12:08 |

I definitely do that whenever I see a badly modified good car.

Okay for what it was. If it would have had the 3.1 V6 they were offered with (along with just about everything else GM sold in the '90s), I would've kept it longer. But it had the 2.2 four-cylinder mated to a three-speed automatic. It was dangerously slow, especially since the transmission was slowly grenading itself. Merging to get on the interstate was dangerous because it would slam itself into first gear and stick there if you gave it more than half throttle. It never would shift out of first gear if you didn't let off the gas. I drove the piss out of it for about a year and modded it how I wanted (Beretta GTU wheels and ground effects, tint, stereo, alarm, Beretta GT spoiler, etc.). and sold it to a girl for $1,700. It blew up on her about two months later. The transmission finally died. I think she junked it. To this day, if I see a Beretta, it turns my head. They're downright rare now.

2000 Honda Civic Si. Of all the hateful Hondas out there, this is the one I love. Pictured is my car circa 2009. Took me 1 year to build it from the ground up and it was promptly stolen a few months after I finished it. I think its untimely theft instilled an even deeper love for this econobox turned high-revving spaz.
Background: Here are the photos of when I first picked her up.

I really like the early 90's Oldsmobile 88. Comfortable, powerful enough, decent economy.
That, and it's stablemate Buick LeSabre for the same reasons. I've never driven a Bonneville but I imagine it'd be the same deal.
